The Challenge

The client’s current AWS cloud workload in the Singapore region includes VMs, storage, and various services. They seek CloudThat’s partnership for containerization, autoscaling with spot instances, and migrating EC2-hosted applications to Amazon EKS. The existing 3-tier architecture includes Amazon EC2 web and application servers connected to Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon RDS, ElastiCache, Amazon Redshift, MongoDB, Neo4j, and OpenSearch. CloudThat will collaborate with their DevOps team to optimize their cloud infrastructure for cost, scaling, performance, and security.

Solutions

• We implemented Terraform modular code to deploy all the AWS resources. By using modular code, we have simplified the process of deploying additional resources and reduced the risk of errors.
• Implemented a CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) tooling strategy by utilizing Jenkins, enabling automated code deployments for front end and backend applications.
• Deployed services like Nexus, Sonarqube, vault, istio on the Amazon EKS using the helm charts on the Amazon EKS cluster.
• Implemented AWS IAM which enables centralized management of users, roles, and permissions to securely control access to Amazon EKS services and resources.
• Implemented HPA (Horizontal Pod Autoscaler) that automatically scales the number of pods in a pod based on CPU, memory and number of requests.
• Implemented cluster autoscaler to scales number of nodes based on resource utilization of CPU and Memory.
• Custom Node Groups that create to group nodes based on their hardware or software configuration.
• Implemented Istio service mesh on an Amazon EKS cluster for enhanced traffic management, monitoring and tracing of requests across services. Configuring the Istio ingress controller for management of incoming traffic and AWS load balancer for optimal performance.

The Results

Successfully set up DevOps infrastructure on time, maintained high system availability, streamlined workflows with an 80% reduction in manual tasks, and ensured full compliance with industry security standards from inception.
