The Challenge

The client’s AWS infrastructure had a web application and database on the same EC2 instance. Due to a lack of disaster recovery and high availability, which exposed their data to risks during outages, they wanted to enhance database security, upgrade MySQL, and implement a backup solution.

Solutions

• We created a custom Amazon VPC with all the necessary network components.
• We recommended Amazon RDS for MySQL database db.m5.xlarge (4vCPU, 16GB RAM) for their database server and
• Migrated the existing database in Amazon EC2 instance t3.medium (2vCPU, 4GB RAM) leveraging the AWS Database Migration service
• We enabled automated backups and performance insights for Amazon RDS
• AWS Key Management service was used for encrypting EBS volumes and Amazon RDS
• For High Availability, we placed the Amazon EC2 instance in an auto-scaling group for scalability, and the traffic from the internet was controlled by an application load balancer
• For Disaster recovery solutions, we automated backups for AWS services like Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, and EBS volumes by leveraging AWS Backup service for safeguarding business continuity and minimize downtime risks
• Followed the AWS security Baseline Guide and enabled all security best practices for the customer
• Amazon GuardDuty was enabled for threat detection against DDoS attacks
• AWS services leveraged in this solution are Amazon RDS, Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, AWS Backup, Amazon EC2 auto scaling group, Amazon GuardDuty, Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon VPC and AWS CloudTrail.

Improved database security and performance ensured 99.99% uptime, and established reliable disaster recovery and threat detection with optimized RTO and extensive monitoring.
