Introduction
Traditionally, Q&A intents in Amazon Lex required developers to define intents, slots, and responses explicitly. While effective, these approaches could become cumbersome for dynamic or large-scale datasets. By integrating Generative AI capabilities, Amazon Lex allows:
- Dynamic Response Generation: AI-driven generation of responses based on the query and knowledge base.
- Contextual Understanding: Enhanced understanding of user intent by analyzing historical interactions and query context.
- Knowledge Base Integration: Seamless integration with external knowledge bases to provide real-time, accurate answers.
- No Lambda Dependency: There is no need to use AWS Lambda to invoke the model separately. Amazon Lex’s integration with Generative AI models, such as those in Amazon Bedrock, allows direct interaction with the model, reducing complexity and latency.
Building a QnA Bot with Generative AI in Amazon Lex
- Configuring Model Access and Knowledge Base in Amazon Bedrock
The AWS account should have access to the following Amazon Bedrock models:
- At least one embedding model from Amazon (e.g., Titan Embeddings G1 – Text or Titan Text Embeddings V2)
- At least one Haiku model from Anthropic.
Amazon Bedrock offers a streamlined way to integrate and manage knowledge bases, which serve as repositories of structured or unstructured data that enhance the responses of AI models. The Knowledge Bases section in Bedrock allows users to create, test, and evaluate knowledge repositories for various applications.
Follow the below steps to create a knowledge base. Click on Knowledge Base with vector store as in the screenshot below.
Provide a unique name for your Knowledge Base in the Knowledge Base name field.
Choose one of the following options:
- Create and use a new service role: This option allows Bedrock to create a service role for the Knowledge Base automatically.
- Use an existing service role: Select this option if you already have a predefined AWS IAM role.
Choose a data source and select Amazon S3, as shown below.
Configure the Data Source as screenshots below.
- Enter a name for your data source.
- Specify the Amazon S3 Data Source Location
- Provide the Amazon S3 URI
- Select a Parsing Strategy as Amazon Bedrock default parser.
- Select a Chunking strategy as Default Chunking. Click on Next.
Select the Embedding model as Titan Text Embeddings v2 as it is the latest text embedding model.
Select Vector database as Quick create a new vector store and vector store as Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL Serverless – new as below screenshot. Click on Next.
After following the above steps, the knowledge base will be created somehow. Once the Knowledge base is created successfully, go inside that created knowledge base and Select Data Source as below.
- Click on Sync to synchronize the Amazon S3 content with this specific knowledge base.
- Click on Test to test the knowledge base. Check whether the knowledge base can respond with accurate results from the Amazon S3 data source.
2. Creating the Amazon Lex Bot with QnA Intent
In the Amazon Lex console, Click Create Bot and follow the steps below to create the bot and QnA intent inside the bot.
- Select the Creation method as Traditional and Create a blank bot.
- Provide a unique Bot name in the Bot configuration.
- Select AWS IAM Permissions as Create a role with basic Amazon Lex permissions.
- In the Add languages section, select the language as English (IN) so that Lex can accept both text and voice inputs.
- Click on Done and Lex bot will get created successfully.
Once the bot is created successfully, follow the below steps to create the intent inside the bot.
- In the All-languages section, select
- Click on Add Intent and select Use built-in intent.
- In the Use built-in intent window, select Built-in intent as QnAIntent – GenAI feature, provide a unique Intent name and click on Add as below screenshots.
- In the QnA configuration section, select the model as Anthropic Claude 3 Haiku or 3.5 Haiku.
- Choose a knowledge store as a Knowledge base for Amazon Bedrock and provide the Knowledge Base ID of which is created in the above steps.
- Then click on Build and takes some time to build successfully with these changes.
- Now click on Test to test the GenAI QnA Bot. Provide any text or voice input and get the relevant response from the S3 Data source document.
