About the Client

The International Centre for Clean Water (ICCW) at Chennai’s IITM Research Park was established in 2018. It uses innovation and technology to address water challenges. Collaborating with various stakeholders, ICCW offers consultancy services in water management, security mapping, and impact measurement, emphasizing an open and collaborative approach to ensure sustainable water resources.

The Challenge

The client aims to assess system efficiency, water and soil contamination levels for farmer well-being using aggregated IoT sensor data. Facing storage constraints, they seek a secure, scalable cloud database solution coupled with improved data visualization tools for enhanced data control and informed decision-making.

Solutions

  • For long-term storage of user data files, water, and soil sensor data, Amazon S3 is employed, providing scalability, security, data availability, and data archive support.
  • Amazon Cognito manages user authentication and authorization and issues OAUTH 2.0 tokens via a single user pool for third-party users to transmit sensor data.
  • Amazon API Gateway creates HTTP-based REST APIs for accessing water sensor data and OAUTH tokens from Amazon Cognito via third-party web applications.
  • Water sensor data is streamed from Amazon API Gateway to Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose.
  • Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose is used for ETL processing and loading water sensor data into Amazon S3, with AWS Lambda transforming the data.
  • Soil sensor data is obtained from third-party web applications via third-party APIs and sent to Amazon S3 and Amazon OpenSearch using AWS Lambda.
  • Amazon OpenSearch Kibana is used for near real-time data analysis and visualization.
  • Amazon Athena facilitates data analysis directly in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) using standard SQL.

The Results

A centralized data store accommodates 100X MBs, real-time sensor streaming via cloud solutions ensures secure access, and Amazon OpenSearch Kibana facilitates informed decision-making with interactive dashboards and user-managed hierarchy.
